It’s more than 150 years since Thomas Manners formed his joinery and building business in Peel Street, Bishop Auckland. The company, registered in 1916, has been in the ownership of the Manners Family every since and is now managed by Thomas’ great grandson, Robert and his son, Simon. This continuity is one of our greatest strengths; it brings maturity and longevity that convert into added value for our clients. They can be sure that they will benefit from the experience and professionalism that comes with a company that has seen so many others come and go.

The company is made up of three divisions:

Construction is the largest area of activity; we have completed many prestigious projects throughout the North East working closely with NHS Trusts, Local Authorities, social landlords and commercial and private clients.

Our Specialist Joinery division is an extremely valuable asset to the company. The division deliver services across the whole of the country to main contractors as well as directly to clients. The quality and workmanship of the bespoke products they manufacture are in a class of their own.

Our Small Works division is a highly organised, rapid reaction department that in the main, handles repairs, maintenance and insurance work for clients across the North of England.

Over recent years we have pursued a policy of controlled expansion and our present turnover is circa £12m per annum. This has necessitated an increase in staff to more than 75 full time employees, and also necessitated the move to our new premises.

As for the next 150 years; who knows, but we have every intention of still being around in the year 2160.
