Freeman Hospital – MESC Laboratory

C592-Freeman-01A complex project involving the refurbishment and refittng of a busy laboratory that was required to remain operational 24/7 throughout the duration of the works.

Won in competitive tender, this project presented a number of challenges specific to, but common in construction projects within the NHS estate.

The Challenges:

The laboratory was accessed from the corridor leading from the hospital’s main entrance into the body of the building. Segregation of the works and means of access and egress was challenging and only resolved through detailed consultation with the building manager and contract administrators.

C592-Freeman-02Site accommodation was limited and deliveries of materials needed careful planning and supervising.

Our client, The Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, uncovered additional works as the project progressed. We were able to respond with flexibility to re‐programme the construction and minimise delay and disruption to this important part of the hospital’s emergency service.

The Solution

This project required great care and attention to detail in the planning and delivery. Health and safety were, as usual, at the top of our priorities and our ability to deliver complex projects in challenging and sensitive environments was key to satisfying the client’s aspirations.
